![]() I remember back in the day wanting to decorate my UI with Christmas-themed UI skins. This was an awesome feature because it allowed you to customize the skin of IMVU. One important difference was that the IMVU version of 2006 had an inventory section for “UI Skins”. The inventory was not yet integrated into the chat window. The chat was a separate window like in the picture above and lo and behold, the IMVU cafeteria is a classic room, but back in the day, it was both really awesome and very boring due to the lack of rooms on IMVU. ![]() It’s very strange compared to what we have today, but back then, there weren’t many items in the shop and people would keep small friends list. The messenger itself had two categories like in the picture above, one for “buddies” and one for “inventory”. The IMVU client was a simple program much like other messenger application from around that time (MSN, Yahoo messenger). I had many memories of old stuff and I tried researching to provide images that could accurately describe what it used to look like back in 2006 and the following years. Note: The following article is written from my own experience. If you’re curious to know how IMVU used to be back in my time, keep on reading (or just look at the pictures :D). I joined IMVU in 2006 and everything back then was much different! From the way the client looked, how shopping was done and even what kind of upgrades you could buy for your avatar. It's much easier to follow, but focusing on it can diminish the overall allure of exploring and chatting in a virtual world.Have you ever wondered how IMVU used to be over 10 years ago? 15 years ago? We’ll dive deep into it! □ IMVU also has a traditional text chat box. This works OK with a few people but can be very hard to follow in crowded areas. By default, chat appears in speech bubbles over the avatar of the person chatting. Once loaded, it tends to run well without any issues. IMVU can take a long time to load initially, even on newer computers. In addition to walking, you can dance, jump and choose from a wide range of other movements. There are a number of expressions or emotes you can make rather than chatting. You can set its current mood, such as happy, sad or excited. Your avatar moves around the world as you control it. However, if you come across an avatar feature you just have to have right now, then you're probably going to spend some real-world moolah. You’ll earn credits just by being active, and savvy shoppers can take advantage of timed specials to stretch their credits far. Some of the customization options are free, but many cost credits. The program makes it easy to find your friends, and there are many places where friends can go off to enjoy some privacy.Įxploration of the world is accomplished using an avatar, and you can customize your avatar in many different ways: skin color, hair style, clothes, accessories, pets and more. As you move into a new area, you'll be chatting with fellow users in the same zone. They are essentially virtual chat rooms: bars, pizza parlors, outdoor gardens, dance clubs, shopping malls and so forth. The world is huge and consists of many different areas. You don't have a health bar or have to worry about someone or something killing you. It's Sims-like in some respects and similar to an MMO in many others, but there are no gameplay elements. IMVU provides a living, breathing virtual world for you to enter and explore. ![]() IMVU is an instant messaging tool that lets you communicate with friends and even strangers in a three-dimensional environment.
